Ipswich & ES v Long Melford Cricket Club Sat 1st XI on Sat 23 Apr 2016 at 1.00pm
Long Melford Cricket Club Won By 59 runs

Match report After last weeks wash out, Long Melford made the trip to Chantry Park to take on newly promoted Ipswich & East Suffolk in their first game of the season. After a year off from the captaincy Gareth Boon resumed the reigns and preceded to lose the the toss on a cold damp day and were asked to have a bat first.

Tom Barnard and Steve Martin opened the innings after a slowish start gradually got into the swing of things and frustrated and punished the Ipswich bowlers, putting on an excellent stand of 94 before Steve Martin was bowled for a well crafted 41. 18 overs remained, Cameron Stace fell without scoring to what looked a harsh lbw decision, this brought Vice Captain Joe Harvey to the wicket. Harvey and Barnard upped the temp with some big hitting, clever running and outrageous shots, especially from Barnard, before Barnard fell 14 short of a deserved century with 8 overs left. Harvey went for 24 and Hale and Hoadley went cheaply, Jason Wade and Adam Matthews held their ends up and scored well late on to leave Melford 187 for 6 off their allotted overs.

On a good wicket but exceptionally slow outfield 188 looked daunting, but getable. Losing the likes of Stuart Whitehart and James French who have moved on to Sudbury and Hadleigh respectively meant Melford were slightly weaker in the bowling department, but they needn't have worried as Melford grabbed an early breakthrough. This came when Gareth Boon tapped the Ipswich opener in front although there was a hint of bat, the umpire raised the finger of death. Hoadley picked up a deserved wicket soon after and Boon struck again leaving Ipswich 30 for 3 off 12 overs.

Melford's fielding was superb throughout the day and Steve Martin took a simple catch of the bowling of Barnard to leave Ipswich 4 down. The pressure was starting to tell and when Steve took off to remove Nick Patel one handed goalkeeper style Ipswich where in trouble. Drinks normally brings a wicket but today it didn't as Ipswich plundered 35 runs off the 2 overs after drinks which caused skipper Boon to make some changes. Jason Wdae came on and turned the game once again with two wickets in two balls leaving Ipswich 61 to win off of 77 deliveries. The game was put soon after as Boon struck 3 times in one over , claiming 5 for 30 and to give Melford a comfortable win and 20 points.
