Match report Long Melford 1st XI vs. Lakenheath

Two Counties Division 2 – Week 3

Long Melford Cricket Club’s 1st XI this week entertained a winless Lakenheath side on a cold & cloudy afternoon at the Meetingfield, Long Melford.

With Lakenheath intent on securing a first victory and lifting themselves from the foot of the table, Melford aimed to begin securing more points to build on an encouraging start to the 2015 season.

Melford skipper Stuart Whitehart won the toss and subsequently invited Lakenheath to bat first.

The usual opening bowling partnership of Gareth Boon & James French strangled the Lakenheath openers from the start and had whipped out the number 2 batsman by over 5. Bowling with genuine pace & bounce, French was unlucky not to be among the wickets in the early stages.

With a change of bowling to bring Stuart Whitehart into the attack the Lakenheath wickets began to fall as they struggled to find runs. Shane Leech, the Lakenheath captain offered some resistance with a gritty 40, however without any significant middle order partnerships, the overs rolled on and the total stagnated.

The bowling of Tom Barnard collected 2 wickets in the middle overs, however the stand out bowling performance from Gareth Boon of 4 for 39 from 14 overs ensured Lakenheath only cleared the 100 run mark in over 37 of 45.

Some late, lower order hitting from Lakenheath eventually took the total to a below par 139 for the loss of 9 wickets.

Melford’s fielding was tidy & agile with only 1 catch being dropped in the innings.

After the tea interval, Melford’s opening batting partnership of Tom Barnard & Hugh Walters took to the field and set about the Lakenheath bowling from the off.

Hugh Walters fell for a run a ball 33 including one six and 3 fours whilst Tom Barnard went four overs later, out for 24, both pulling hard to the Lakenheath captain Shane Leech fielding at midwicket.

Adam Matthews steadied the middle order with another obdurate innings and gaining support from Sarmad Murtaza after Joe Harvey’s dismissal, steered the Melford side to victory with a patient 40 not out, a knock that included 6 fours.

With this 7 wicket win under their belt, Long Melford’s 1st XI now lie 5th in the table and are poised to take on the league leaders Ipswich next week at the Meetingfield, Long Melford.
