Match report
The under 13’s lost their first game of the season by a narrow margin of eight runs in a competitive and absorbing contest at Eight Ash Green. After Bryn Gartland lost the toss and Melford were asked to field, Eight Ash Green got off to a fast start, mainly thanks to the bat of Spicer, who punished anything loose from the Melford bowlers. By the fourteenth over, Eight Ash Green were handily placed at 73/2. However, after Birchall was bowled by debutant Jayce Manning for a handy 16, some excellent tight bowling firstly by Archie Ingram (2 overs for 4 runs) and then a devastating late spell by captain Gartland saw Eight Ash Green stutter to 95/7. Particularly impressive was Gartland’s final over of the innings, where he took a treble wicket maiden.
Unfortunately for Melford, Spicer took his good form with the bat into the field also, and got the home side off to a flier with the wickets of Cameron Cade and Bryn Gartland for ducks. However, a steady partnership of 23 between Ben Willingham and Finlay Sinclair bought Melford back into the match, before Sinclair put on 37 in a quicker partnership with Dan Meekings. After Meekings was dismissed, Melford required a tough 31 off the final 4 overs, with the home side bringing back the impressive Spicer to attempt to finish the game. Impressively, Sinclair took this opportunity to smack three boundaries off the home side’s quick bowler, including an excellent straight drive down the ground, which was the pick of the shots in the game. The final over dawned with Melford needing 12 off it, but showing superb composure, the home side skipper Bowles only conceded three leaving Eight Ash Green victors by 8 runs. Overall, the Melford boys can be reasonably happy with their efforts, in particular by seeming to unearth an opener of great promise in Finlay Sinclair, who displayed remarkably mature shot selection in his 45 not out.
