Match report Match report Nowton v Long Melford Sunday 1st XI, 18 May 2014
Hunts County Bats Division 3. Long Melford won by 6 wickets
After losing the toss and being put into the field, Melford soon made Nowton rue their decision with Wenborn setting about the top order like a veteran. This was the first time he had opened the bowling, but on this performance it will not be the last. With Newman bowling his gentle away swing from the other end, Wenborn was bowling inswing with enough deception to bamboozle the openers. His first 3 overs saw him remove Meeson (1), Podbury (2) and Cordell (4) to leave to score at 9 for 3 inside 6 overs. Newman then got in on the act, removing Jonson (6) and Curtis (8) to restrict Nowton to 33 for 5 from just 12 overs. Fobbit and Hardy set about constructing a total to defend, but Fobbit was living a charmed life, being dropped 3 times on his way to 28. When Hardy was caught by Skeggs low to his left and the score at 46 for6, Spencer came to the wicket and put up a stonewall defence to see off Newman (3 for 28)and Wenborn(3 for 29) and take momentum into the second half of the innings. They batted well for 14 overs before Fobbit was bowled by Wood (1 for 28). Spencer used his experience to creep the score along before deciding to hit big. His proved his downfall as he holed out to Sawyer off the bowling of Skeggs. Next ball, Skeggs clean bowled Denley (11) hitting the top of middle stump, but the hat trick failed to materialise after Rolfe negotiated the delivery safely. This was small restbite for Rolfe (0) as Skeggs (3 for 27) removed him in the same over.
Melford’s batsmen were aware of the movement that the conditions were offering, but Nowton did not have the same luck. N. Henbury and Kemp settled in comfortably at the wicket and scoring with some lovely strokeplay before Henbury as bowled by Denley for 24. Byford joined Kemp and the score moved on slower as the field was spread far and wide to prevent Byford from hitting his traditional lusty blows. Kemp (28)0eventually lost concentration and was bowled by Walker. Walker (2 for 22) also had Byford caught out on the boundary edge by Curtis for 25. Hoadley (21no) and S. Henbury (10no) eased Melford over the line to in with 11 overs to spare.
