Match report Long Melford 1st X1 264- 6 beat Acton 77 all out by 187 runs.
An eagerly anticipated local derby between Long Melford 1st X1 and Acton unfortunately turned into a very one sided affair as Long Melford dominated the game with bat and ball even though there were more of Long Melford’s Saturday first team in the Acton line up.
Melford started well with N Henbury (17) and A Skeggs (30) putting on 48 for the first wicket as Henbury missed the straight one from Buster Fisher (3-49 off 9) with Skeggs falling shortly after being bowled by a pearler from Sturgeon. At 3 and 4 were B Byford and M Wood with the latter getting a golden duck. Into the fray entered Matt Hoadley who put a partnership which effectively ended the game of 133 together with Byford (62) who departed tentatively to mid-wicket.
Hoadley (107) then started carting the ball to all parts of the ground with Wenborn (28) also finding the boundary leaving Acton with a target of 265 for victory.
Acton’s reply with Melford’s Saturday opening pair of N Wright and S Martin did not start well with Martin departing for just 5 as he was caught by Skeggs at a very apt position of silly mid off. In at 3 was Acton’s top scorer M Dalton (31) who offered the only real resistance to the Melford attack of Ayrton, Baldrick, Hall and Wenborn.
Once Wright (17) was bowled by Ayrton the remaining 7 wickets fell with the batsmen adding just 16 runs between them which included Melford players L Phillips and J French. Whilst the other 2 bowlers were not expensive the outstanding bowling performances were from Wenborn who finished with his best figures 4 for 14 off 6.1 overs and Hall 10 overs 7 maidens 3 wickets for just 12 runs.
