Needham Market v Long Melford Cricket Club Sat 1st XI on Sat 05 Jul 2014 at 1pm
Long Melford Cricket Club Won By 3 wkts

Match report Melford moved to within 3 points of the promotion spots with a toughly fought 3 wicket win at Needham Market this Saturday.

After a delayed start due to the earlier rain, Melford bowled first and should have had both openers back in the pavilion within the 1st 3 overs, but both chances went begging. Skipper Gareth Boon finally made the breakthrough his opening spell deserved when he had Mortimer caught behind. The unusually ineffective Whitehart was replaced by Joe Harvey and he picked up Melford's 2nd wicket, taking a return catch from the dangerous Wade leaving Needham 69 for 2. The majority of the early runs had come from Hills, and he reached his 50 before Harvey trapped him Leg before. Boon grabbed his 2nd wicket soon after finishing with excellent figures of 2-40 off 15 overs.

With Boon's spell finished it was left to 17 year old Phil King to shine. He grabbed a wicket with his first ball and then took another in his next over to rip the heart out of the Needham batting line up. His controlled and mature spell of 4-25 off his 7 overs were a highlight and shows great promise for the future. Joe Harvey finished with 3 wickets and when the final wicket fell to Chris Wenborn, Melford required 183 for victory.

Melford's reply started fluently with regular openers negating the Needham opening bowlers early efforts. Nick Wright looked in great nick hitting two huge sixes before getting over excited and missing a full ball from Matthews. Steve Hale joined Steve Martin at the crease and they proceeded to put on 45 for the 2nd wicket before Hale became Matthews 2nd victim edging behind for 20. Martin fell into the same trap shortly after, going for 29 leaving Melford 89 for 3.
Joe Harvey and Stuart Whitehart came together and knuckled down and looked seemingly untroubled picking off the bowling at will moving the score onto 152 before a suicidal mix up saw Whitehart run out for 32. Melford, who always try to entertain, did so again as they threw away 3 more wickets in quick succession to keep supporters on the edge of their seats. It was left to Ashley Skeggs to keep his head and finally hit the winning boundary with 3 overs remaining to give Melford another 20 points in there quest go straight back up to Division 2.
