Long melford Saturday 1st team vs Abberton 1st team
Long melford win by 47 runs.
With the weather against most local clubs melford had a big thank you to there groundsman Ivan whitehart for making the ground playable. With both captains agreeing to a reduce game of 35 overs. Abberton won the toss and put melford on to a green track seemed to be the right thing to do. Melford set about there task with nick wright and Steve Martin batting first , copeing well with the ball moving around on a green track. Wright and Martin waiting patiently for the bad ball to come and when it did they put it to the boundary. Melford got to 35 then wright was the first to go with 15 which brought bill Byford to the crease, Byford and Martin started to rebuild Abberton continued to bowel well it wasn't long till Byford got in to his stride with some fine stroke play, Martin was also going well at the other end then with score on 52 Martin was the next to go with 34 , joe Harvey was soon on his way back to the pavilion with score at 54 Hugh Walters then joined Byford Walters was soon hitting big shots and Byford continued to score well. Melford got to 115 before Byford missed timed one to cover and fell for 32 Stuart whitehart joined Walters , both big hitters tried to get melford at a definable total Walters tried one shot to many and was caught on the boundary on 35. Lee Phillips was next in but could only mange 1 run with the score at 154 Gareth boon joined whitehart with overs running out whitehart tried to get on with things but only managed to miss time one but got a very handy 22. With 3 overs left Craig boon joined his brother but trying to get on with things Craig only managed to play on to his stumps, James French was next In. French and Gareth boon pushed hard and was turning ones in to twos melford ended on 171 for 8 off there 35.
Abbertons openers were not aloud to get in to there stride as James French took a wicket in the first over leaving Abberton 2 for 1runs then Gareth boon got his 1st wicket on the second over leaving Abberton 5 for 2. Abberton found it tough as boon and French were unplayable at times boon the got his second wicket with Chris Cleverly taking a good catch behind leaving Abberton 29 for 3 off 8 overs. Melford were well on top and did not want to let it slip in the field melford were superb and did not give a chance Stuart whitehart then dropped a very hard chance but recovered well to run out ward leaving Abberton 35 for 4 boon then got his 3rd wicket with a good catch from lee Phillips 36 for 5. With black clouds building up and rain in the air boon then got his 4th wicket with a fine delivery which cleaned bowled m. Johnson leaving Abberton 40 for 6 melford were hoping to wrap things up before the rain but that was not to be as the ran came, covers were on for 30mins but with time on our side and blue skies near play resumed. Melford set about the task to get the last 4 wickets Abberton showed some fight but French continued where he left off then got his 2nd wicket with a fine ball that cleaned bowled m,Sullivan leaving Abberton 76 for 7. French's figures were 11overs 41 for 2. Boon then had his chance for a 5 wicket hall but was not to be as Byford put down a hard chance at gully. Boon's figures were 11overs 3 maidens 29 runs for 4.
Whitehart and Walters then joined the attack with only 3 wickets remaining Abberton started to show some residence but with a lapse of concentration by abbertons A. Trussler was run out by g. Boon leaving them 98 for 8 melford were trying everything to get the last 2 wickets for a full 20 points but where starting to run out of overs , the Abberton bats mans managed to hang on melford failed to take the last 2 wickets but it was a fine win by melford by 47 runs.
Once again it was a fine team performance from the mellie man.
