Match report Match report Long Melford 1st XI v Bury St. Edmunds 2nd XI 17 May 2014
Two Counties Division 3. Long Melford won by 6 wickets
Batting first, Bury St. Edmunds started cautiously, with B. Curran and Aldous finding runs hard to come. After holding out for 14 overs, Aldous finally fell to a catch from his own bowling by G. Boon (1 for 30) for 15. B. Curran(31) was content in hitting boundaries, 7 in all, before being caught by a high flying Wright at gully from French(2 for 49). In French’s next over he had Godden (1) caught behind by Lane. Walters replaced Boon, and was soon in the act removing Colburn for 22.With the score consistently moving at 3 an over, Melford Skipper turned to Byford to change the pace. This proved to be a turning point as Bury undone their hard work. First ball, T. Curran hit the ball to mid wicket, fortunately for him he was dropped, but this only resulted in Ward being run out without troubling the scorers. Curran was not so lucky 2 balls later when he chased a wide one to give Lane his third catch of the innings, and then Fairweather hit out to the boundary for 0. The over had seen 3 wickets fall for 4 runs. Skelton and Hills set about rebuilding the innings will Hills (18) using some powerful hitting to move the score on before giving Byford (3 for 28) his third wicket. Imam joined Skelton (27 no) to get Bury to 150 for 8.
Long Melford got their innings off to a flyer with Wright and Martin score at 5 an over before Wright (26) miscued a B. Curran delivery to Hills at fly slip. But the momentum failed to halt with Byford joining Martin at the crease. Big hitting from Byford (49, including 10 fours and 1 six) and some exquisite stroke play from Martin (41) moved Melford ever closer to their target before both fell inside to 2 overs to Imam. Walters (4) was bowled by Hills, leaving Harvey (9no) and Whitehart (4no) to steer Melford home with 14 overs to spare.
