Saturday saw a welcome return to winning ways for the Mellie 2nds
All be it against a depleted visiting 9 from Abberton 2nds. Charitable home skipper Matthew Lime-Hoadley allowed the away team to bat first at the Meetingsfield Oval. Dave Routledge opened the attack from the gate end of the ground and was soon into his stubborn nagging line and length and Abberton soon found themselves 3 down with only 47 runs on the scoreboard. Abberton opening bat John Gallant played the traditional “Boycott” role, that was until the home Skipper Hoadley generous nature got the best of him and he gave away 28 runs to Gallant from 2 overs that he bowled. Routledge bowled well and picked up 4-40 which included the wicket of M.Johnson who was snapped up by a brilliant catch by Cameron Stace at square leg. Lawrence Hall replaced Hoadley and duly helped bring an end the Abberton innings by snapping up 3 for 7 from just 3 overs. Gallant was left not out 48 as the away side were all out for 102 inside 23 overs, leaving Mellie 103 to score from 67 overs.
In reply the Mellie opening pair of John Stuck and David Hodge cruised home, scoring the required runs in just 16.3 overs. Both openers finished 45 not with Stuck hitting 7 boundaries, but was out shone by Hodge who found the boundary 10 times. The match was completed by 3.30 pm as Mellie 2nds gained 20 points and Abberton just a single point, but still up held the clubs name by turning up rather than cancelling.
