President's XII v Chairman's XII

So the sun duly shone, port flowed, the food was sumptuous, the ground looked every bit as good as our Facebook page piccie, and much merriment was had by all.
Pleased to report that the Chairman's XII all reported for duty on time and duly attired...well almost Mr Adam Kemp! How many years...??!! And ably supported by Umpires Ivan Whitehart and Matthew Wood and scorer Marty Maxim.
Inserted on "a road" (quote Ivan Whitehart) the Chairman's XII got off to a flyer with Messrs Ashley Skeggs and Gareth Boon moving the score on to a very respectable 78 or so for none at lunch.
Lunch was a feast prepared by the ever industrious and creative Byford ladies Shelly Byford and Danielle Byford.
Strangely thereafter affairs were somewhat more muted particularly after the opening pair were removed by some "on the spot" bowling led by Melford legend Stuart Carpenter, and Martin Sherridan and a mini collapse saw the Chairman's XII struggling to move through 150 with any momentum. But a dazzling cameo from Matt Hoadley ably supported by Bill Byford and a contribution from our own Melford legend David Totman as well as a smart 15 from the Treasurer saw a declaration at 225-7.

In reply, some smart revs "spit and turn" from Lawrence Hall accounted for Stef Marks early on but the President had already played his trump card with James Polsted and Nathan Paul providing a severe examination for Lawro, Bill and Matt's bowling. Nevertheless an attacking field was maintained throughout, supported by some diving stops and energetic fielding, and whilst two quick wickets for "almost-a hat-trick" Hoads brought some encouragement that an unlikely victory over el Presidente could be achieved, Stuckie showed why he is such a prolific run scorer, escorting Nathan to an unbeaten hundred.
With 20 overs in the last hour, the President's XII needed 6 an over. At the start of the last over an unlikely 13 were still required for a President's win. Up stepped Ashley "why have I not bowled" Skeggo... First ball - Nathan walloped a 6 (bit of a long hop Skeggo!). Second ball - 4 (yes, so was that!). Calamity was about to ensue! Two needed for a tie. Three for a win...

Apologies to those with no name checks but everyone chipped in to make it an excellent day. Huge thanks obviously to our President Richard Kemp who's generosity makes the day possible and so enjoyable for all, to all those who played and even more so to those who supported providing food, drinks, washing up and drying up facilities, scored, umpired,"chirped" and to Hannah Bird who took some excellent photos some of which will be posted shortly.

Finally, in his closing address Richard paid tribute to his sisters Dorothy and Joan who passed away last year, who were great supporters of the Club and in memoriam Richard has had a bench provided at the far corner of the ground.
