Match report Dependable Duo Help Eliminate Exning

Two fantastic individual performances from Captain Matt Hoadley and Bill Byford helped the Mellie Sunday 1st’s to a comfortable victory over Exning.



Batting first – after Hoadley won his 2nd toss of the year – Mellie made a slow start against the swinging ball. John Stuck, Sean Henbury and Adam Kemp were all back in the hutch after 12 overs with only 35 on the board. This brought Byford out to the crease and he soon got to work, dispatching the Exning bowlers to all parts of the ground. The middle order supported Byford with important cameos from Nigel Henbury (25) and Matt Holt (36). Partnerships of 57 and 60 between Byford and Henbury, followed by Holt - in 16 overs - helped Mellie reach an imposing 219 all out, despite the late flurry of wickets. Byford finished on an impressive 79*.



After devouring the ever impressive teas, Melford got stuck into the Exning top order. Holt removed both openers before Hoadley got to work, extracting considerable movement off the wicket, which was once again terrifically prepared by Ivan Whitehart. Despite the visitors desire to play attacking shots throughout, Hoadley demolished the middle order on his way to impressive figures of 5-39 from his 10 overs. Gareth Boon picked up 3 wickets along the way, resulting in a comprehensive victory for Melford, by 123 runs.
