Match report
Hunts County Bats Suffolk League Division Three
Bardwell 214-9 lost to Long Melford Sunday I 219-7 by three wickets
A sizeable contribution from a back-to-form Bill Byford saw Long Melford beat league leaders Bardwell on Sunday.
Bardwell started well with Wade hitting 53 after being dropped four times and he was joined by skipper Wakeman who also made a half-century before falling LBW to all-rounder Byford. The run rate then slowed with Matt Hoadley and skipper Ashley Skeggs picking up wickets, the latter finishing with three wickets for 49 from his ten overs.
Melford’s top three batsmen all fell for single figures so the target of 215 did not look easy until Byford entered the fray with the score on 23 after eight overs. Playing aggressively from the start, he hit 10 fours from his first 12 scoring shots and when he was joined by Skeggs in the 12th over it looked as if the pair would bat through.
However the 106-run partnership ended with Skeggs caught behind for 43 bringing Hoadley to the crease. Byford then got out for 92 spooning one up in the air with Melford still needing 58 to win but Hoadley managed to hit a six for the winning runs to finish unbeaten on 34 with two balls to spare.
