Mellie 2nd’s Skipper lost the toss again on the hottest Saturday of the season so far and the home side unsurprising elected to bat. Opener Denny punished all of the bowlers to all parts of the ground and some which were outside the ground on his way to a tremendous 150. Denny and Ledgerton put an opening stand of 139, which should have been a lot less if an Alem Dar umpiring stumping has gone the Melford way. Vickery came in at 3 and soon battered his way to 44 with 7 boundaries and a six. The late introduction of Skipper Hoadley to the attack brought 3 wickets leaving the home side setting a daunting total of 283 for 5 from their 45 overs.
With a huge run chase ahead of them Mellie were dealt an early blow with the loss of Steff Marks for a duck. But, the care free hitting of Wright (76), Robinson (41), Hoadley (43) Ellis (25) and Wenborn (30) the Mellie side kept battling all the way. The Braintree Skipper scattered his fielders to all parts of the boundaries to stop the flow of runs and in the end the Mellie men fell 17 runs short, finishing their innings on 266 for 8. A truly valiant effort by a depleted Mellie side, everyone gave a huge effort in very very difficult conditions and gave their all against the league leaders.
