Match report
Report
Melford second eleven travelled to Melton in need of turning their recent form around. Arriving before the opposition (thanks skip!), the “warm up” consisted of listening to the Lions down under whilst lubricating their finely tuned figures. The toss up followed the usual form, yes, we lost again!
Being inserted, Melford made a steady start with Wright and Robinson scoring at around 4 ½ an over. Wright (92) was taking the aggressive role with his 50 coming off 57 balls, whilst Robinson (25) was scoring off the bad ball. Melton had used 5 bowlers before Grubb was joined by M. Jackson, and in the space of 10 balls. 93 runs for the opening partnership in 20 overs. Robinson, Wigens and Boon all departed for 1 run in 10 balls. Hoadley came to the crease and played attacking shots from the off. Unfortunely, Wright had found his runs drying up and the field was set deeper. Hoadley departed for 21, bringing the returning Holt to the wicket. Lord returned to the action with Grubb, but they decided to try bowling from the opposite end to where they started, and this proved to work for Lord, who removed first Wright, run out, and then Holt (16) in 3 balls. A score that looked to be heading in excess of 200 was now limping towards the finish line. Pettitt (1) was dismissed by Lord taking an athletic catch over his shoulder from his own bowling. Stace (4) was trapped leg before by Grubb, and Hall (5) was bowled by Jackson trying to accelerate the scoring. With 15 deliveries left Newman (5 not out) joined Routledge (3 not out) and they saw out the remaining deliveries to avoid giving Melton any extra overs. Would this prove to be important?
After tea, Melton set about chasing down the score, but whilst runs were being taking from Hoadley and Newman, Rouledge (0 for13 from 8) was tying the other end up nicely, restricting the scoring to 3 an over. After 16 overs, the skipper introduced a double bowling change, and Hall, returning after 7 weeks out with a broken finger, took a wicket with his first delivery, and followed up with a catch from his own bowling 3 balls later to halt Melton’s progress. By the half way mark, Boon (1 for 31) got in on the action when Holt caught the hard hitting Draper (38) at point. The process of rebuilding the innings fell to Burnham and Lord. Burnham (19) was being given the hurry up by his own team from the sidelines, but Lord kept him in check. Miscommunication between Lord and Burnham saw the latter run out. Lord (57) continued to attack the bowling and keep the rate down around 5 an over until a mis-cued hit was held by Newman at square leg. The batsmen were still keeping close to what they needed, but another run out, and Hall (3 for 55) bowling Bloomfield with a ball that if it went any slower would have gone backwards, left Melton needing 20 from 3 overs with 3 wickets remaining Grubb (12) and M. Jackson (9 not out) were scoring the runs needed, and as the last over was about to get underway, Melton still had 3 wickets in hand and needed 8 runs to win. With the game held in such a tight situation, the skipper was ready to take up the challenge. First ball, 1 run to M. Jackson. Second ball, Grubb smashes the ball with force, but is amazed to see Hoadley take a return catch. Third ball, Andrews sees his middle stump removed. Fourth ball, the hat-trick is on, but prevented by A. Jackson, but the fifth delivery was too good for him as he is bowled, and Melford won this closely contested game by 6 runs. An excellent team performance, except for 3 dropped catches, and some interesting banter both on and off the field. Next week sees the start of the second half of the season, with the visit of Maldon 3rds. Let’s hope the winning ways continue. Don’t forget to follow the updates on facebook and twitter during the games.
