Long Melford Cricket Club Sat 1st XI v Exning on Sat 29 Jun 2013 at 1.00
Long Melford Cricket Club Won
Match report
Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship
Division Two
Long Melford 152 beat Exning 151 by one run
A thrilling, one-run victory was just reward for a determined Melford performance on a damp and challenging pitch.
Exning’s opening bowlers made the batsmen work for every run after inserting Melford, who were 26 for two after 10 overs.
Several Melford batsmen got starts but could not convert them into big scores. Lee Phillips struck 29, Brett Wright made 36 and Chris Cleverley got 27 in a total of 152 leaving the home side upbeat at tea. James French and Gareth Boon soon found movement with the ball and good fielding had Exning 51 for four but they began to rebuild. With Catley at the crease it looked like there was only ever going to be one winner but when Stuart Whitehart caught and bowled him for 50 with Exning on 128 for 6 Melford had their tails up.
Two more wickets fell for just four runs and, with Exning needing 21 runs for the win and Melford seeking two wickets, it came down to Whitehart and French. French bowled King and, with Exning a run behind, it was do or die for both teams but Whitehart took the last wicket with another return catch to claim a fine win for Melford.
