Match report Long Melford 2nd XI v Kelvedon. Long Melford lost by 129 runs

Long Melford 2's hosted Kelvedon in Division 6, in a match reduced to 40 overs. A much changed team from the previous week, Melford still had a reasonable side, but were always going to struggle against a Kelvedon team which boasted many first eleven players this season, strengthened by their returning university students to the first team. Only 10 started the game for Melford before the chairman was able to arrive and replace a late withdrawal. In that time Kelvedon could have lost both openers. First Newman dropped M. Hart(96) on 1 , then almost ran out Wilson (77) before he reached 20. Kelvedon went along at nearly 6 an over for the first 10. Budd was replaced by Newman, who had an appeal for leg before turned down first ball of the spell. A rain delay in the 15th over had seen Kelvedon bring up their 100 just before, but the delay was only for half an hour. Melford finally broke through when Routledge bowled Wilson in the 22nd over. Catches had been dropped all day to this point, but Budd turned the tide when he caught Ahern off Newman. Budd again then took another catch to give Wigens his first wicket after replacing Routledge after his 13 overs. Newman was to finally rid opener Hart with a long hop hit to Robinson at mid-wicket with the last ball of his spell. A run out by skipper N. Wright and a superb catch by Pettitt meant Melford had picked up 3 bowling points as Kelvedon finished on 243 for 6.

After tea, Kelvedon carried on where they left off. Inside the first 5 overs, N. Wright, Roberts, B. Wright and Robinson were all out with 7 runs on the board, Bradshaw (3 for15) and Van Hootegem (2 for19) causing the damage. Pettitt (11) went in the 10th over with the score moved on to 25. Wigens (15) and Marks (19) steadied the innings, but the former fell with the score on 41. Howlett joined Marks, and they put on 27, the best of the innings, before Marks was caught. Howlett (10) was caught at short fine leg, Parsons diving to his left to take the catch one-handed. When Routledge went for 8, Melford still require 10 runs to gain a batting point. Budd (17n.o.) and Newman (15) managed to find the boundary six times between them, including a six for Newman before being trapped leg before the next ball, giving Kelvedon a 129 run victory.
